The exam at a glance

Two courses, two levels, one plan

Both DP courses have two papers at SL and three at HL, plus the Mathematical Exploration. Lessons prepare for each one.

DP · AA

Analysis and approaches

Paper 1
No calculator · SL 1h 30m · HL 2h
Paper 2
Calculator · SL 1h 30m · HL 2h
Paper 3
HL only · Calculator · 1 hour
Exploration
Internal assessment · 20%

Strong on algebra, proof and calculus. Suits students heading for maths, physics or engineering.

DP · AI

Applications and interpretation

Paper 1
Calculator · SL 1h 30m · HL 2h
Paper 2
Calculator · SL 1h 30m · HL 2h
Paper 3
HL only · Calculator · 1 hour
Exploration
Internal assessment · 20%

Strong on modelling, statistics and technology. Suits students heading for social sciences, business or the life sciences.

MYP

IB MYP Mathematics

Criterion A
Knowing and understanding
Criterion B
Investigating patterns
Criterion C
Communicating
Criterion D
Applying mathematics in real-life contexts

A strong MYP base makes the move to DP AA or AI much smoother.

At SL, Paper 1 and Paper 2 count for 40% each and the Exploration for 20%. The IB is revising both DP Maths courses: students who start in August 2027 sit the new courses, with first exams in May 2029. We teach to whichever version your school follows.

The syllabus

The five topics of both DP courses

AA and AI share the same five topics but treat them differently. HL adds further content in each topic.

  1. 1Number and algebra
  2. 2Functions
  3. 3Geometry and trigonometry
  4. 4Statistics and probability
  5. 5Calculus
Where we slow down

Topics we spend extra time on

These are the parts of the course where marks are most often lost, so lessons give them more practice.

Calculus

Differentiation and integration, with the reasoning written out step by step as the papers require.

Functions and graphs

Transformations, composite and inverse functions, and reading what a graph is really saying.

Paper 1 without a calculator (AA)

Exact values, algebraic manipulation and clean working, for the paper where no calculator is allowed.

Statistics and the GDC (AI)

Choosing the right test or model and using the calculator quickly and correctly under time pressure.

How it works

From free trial to exam day

  1. 1

    Free trial session

Tell us the board, level and time zone. We arrange a free trial so you can see how a lesson runs.

  2. 2

    Start where it’s hard

Lessons follow the syllabus, starting with the topics the student finds hardest.

  3. 3

    Live 1-to-1 lessons

Digital whiteboard, worked examples and past-paper practice, one student and one teacher.

  4. 4

    Recordings and updates

Each session is recorded for revision, and parents get regular progress updates.

Scheduled for your time zone: GST, AST, GMT, CET, SGT, EST and PST.

Questions parents ask

Before you book

Should my child take AA or AI?

AA suits students who enjoy algebra and abstract problems and are heading for maths, physics or engineering. AI suits students who prefer real-world modelling and statistics. Check university entry requirements too, as some courses ask for AA HL.

SL or HL?

HL covers more content and adds a third paper. It is a big step up from SL, so it is worth deciding with the school based on the student’s strength in maths and their university plans.

Do you help with the Mathematical Exploration?

We help students understand the assessment criteria, choose a topic that works, and check that their mathematics is correct. The Exploration itself must stay the student’s own work, as the IB requires.

Do you teach MYP Maths too?

Yes. MYP lessons build the skills behind all four assessment criteria and prepare students for the move to DP AA or AI.

Do lessons use past papers?

Yes. After each topic, the student practises on past IB questions so they get used to the command terms and the markschemes.

How does the free trial work?

Send the form below or message us on WhatsApp with the course, level and time zone. We arrange a free trial session at a time that suits you.
